Why we adopted Chime, by CNPP

THE chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, in Enugu State, Mr. Adonys Igwe, has explained why a coalition of thirty eight political parties adopted Governor Sullivan  Chime as their consensus candidate in the forthcoming general elections.

“We made it quite clear that we adopted Governor Chime because he’s been doing an excellent job in the state. He’s kept his promises to the people of the state and we (CNPP) all came together and agreed that we should adopt him as our sole candidate in the next elections,” Mr Igwe said, adding “All of us who live in this state are living witnesses to the transformation that he has brought about in Enugu.

For us, it’s not just about criticizing someone in power so that we will be called virile opposition.

“If we must criticize people in power who are doing badly, we must also encourage those like Governor Chime who are doing a great job. Our common interest in politics is to see that Enugu State is being developed and if we’ve found someone who’s doing that, we believe it is right to support him.”

The coalition of 38 political parties had, on Thursday, adopted Chime as their sole candidate at a rally organized in conjunction with the Enugu State Youth Coalition, an umbrella body of twenty three youth groups in the state at Okpara Square, Enugu.

The CNPP said on that occasion: “our decision (to adopt) stems from an inner conviction that you (Chime) have done well and you, therefore, deserve as a matter of merit a second term to consolidate on the gains of your current term that is gradually winding up.

“We were neither induced, hired nor paid to out up this rally. Rather, it is our expression of our appreciation of the good works of the governor.”
