AWKA—THE police yesterday cordoned off the gate of Government House in Awka, Anambra State, following last Sunday’s threat via text messages that bomb would explode at the complex within 60 hours if the strike embarked upon by the staff of Anambra State University, ANSU, was not called off.

Fierce-looking policemen took positions at the gate of Government House, close to Enugu-Onitsha expressway, early enough before the arrival of the workers and
visitors to the seat of power and all vehicles, including those marked with both state and federal government plate numbers were thoroughly searched and sniffed
with bomb detectors before being allowed in.

It was gathered that security operatives were still trying to trace the source of the text message which had put fears in the people working at Government
House.

The workers, who were taken aback at the development, wondered why the strike embarked upon by workers in all the state-owned universities in the South East
should be a reason for threatening Anambra Government House.

For most of the working hours, workers discussed the issue, while some of the visitors turned back from the gate.

The main gate leading to the Governor’s Office was securely locked, as Governor Peter Obi was said to have travelled to China.

Vanguard recalls that the South East government-owned universities had remained closed since July 22 this year, following strike by members of the Academic
Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the affected institutions.

Both staff and students of the institutions had at various times, embarked on a peaceful demonstration to prevail on the governors of the five states to look
into their demands but the problems are yet to be resolved.
