PHACCIMA hails Rivers’ social services levy

By George Onah
Port Harcourt—   The Rivers State Government’s Social Services Levy Law has been applauded by the Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, PHACCIMA, and described as a useful law aimed at transforming the state.

President of the chamber, Vincent Furo, told newsmen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, that it supports the law because it “is aimed at protecting for posterity, all the good projects initiated by the administration.”

Represented by the First Deputy President, Emeka Unachukwu, the chamber said, it was an exercise in futility for such huge projects to be put on ground and no law is put in place to keep them functioning for as long as they serve the public.

Furo said PHACCIMA “has been working in harmony with the state government” and that the government does consult the chamber whenever it embarks on matters relating to business ventures and its inputs have helped shape things in the state.

He said the nation’s power sector had not helped the economy, explaining that profit made in the production sector was being ploughed back into the source through fuel to run generators.

However, the chamber said the business climate in Rivers State had improved “tremendously since militancy ceased. Night life has returned, people can now walk the streets anytime of the day and night unmolested and this is encouraging.

“Many of the companies that relocated during that period are back,  in full production and many of them have applied to do business in the state. We are glad and are happy to announce to the nation that Rivers State is back on track for business and other areas.”
