IBADAN—MORE condemnations yesterday, greeted the call by some Northern leaders that President Goodluck Jonathan should either resign or face impeachment.

The condemnation which cut across political parties, poured in torrents with most of them arguing that it was wrong for the minority leaders in the North to think that without them, the nation would not survive.

Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala who spoke through his Special Adviser on Public Communication, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said, “the call by some Northern leaders on Jonathan to resign is on the one hand undemocratic while the threat of impeachment on the other hand, is reckless and unstatemanly”.

He noted that “dangerously, a section of  the North is assuming onto itself a power and influence it does not possess and which can only  strengthens the resolve of those who are in support of the minorities.”

Also, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Oyo State, Chief Femi Lanlehin, said there was no need for such a call now.

To him, the issue of bomb blast that killed about 16 people and injured many others was being handled carefully by the president.

Instead of such call, the politician believes “the issue of terrorism has assumed an international dimension and all Nigerians should come together to find lasting solution to it so that such does not occur again.

It is not the best for our corporate co-existence for them to make such a call. It is needless to heat up the polity unnecessarily. We should team up with the President to prevent future occurrence.

Even, if the President has said anything that could warrant such call, we should call his attention to it rather than outright call for his resignation or impeachment.”

Other people who preferred anonymity,  stated that the nation had got to a point that “we must all sit together to discuss the issue of power  which must not be an exclusive preserve for some people in a country  of  over 40 ethnic groups.”
