ABUJA—STRONG indications emerged last night that the 2011 election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, featured prominently in the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and the governors of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, controlled states.
The closed door meeting, which lasted for over three hours took place in House 7 of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, yesterday.
The meeting was also believed to have deliberated on the attitude of some state governors to the perceived presidential ambition of the President who is likely to declare his intention to join the race any time from now.
Although the outcome of the long meeting was not immediately known, Vanguard gathered that the President and the governors reviewed the election timetable and deliberated on ways to ensure that PDP remained on top of the political situation in view of the short time available before the conduct of the general election.
The President, who presided over the parley, it was learnt, showed so much enthusiasm on the need to ensure that the seeming differences between him and some governors from the South-South were resolved.
Jonathan, Vanguard was told, also took time to reassure some of the governors particularly those who were of the belief that they were being hounded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, INEC, over their perceived opposition to the President’s ambition.
According to a source, “the agenda centres on the INEC timetable, especially the registration of voters and other election-related issues.
“The President does not want any disagreement that may harm the chances of the party in the 2011elections.”
The source revealed that the issue of a South-South governor (names withheld) was also scheduled to be discussed as he had been fingered as the arrowhead of the new opposition to the president’s attempt to be re-elected in next year’s election.
