Big Danny Shittu has paid a big price for not having a club after he was left out of Nigeria’s squad for next month’s 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Guinea.
Shittu has never been short of commitment in a green-white-green shirt, but doubts have continued to creep in over his match fitness even while he was frozen out at Bolton Wanderers.
The big centre-half was released by Bolton early this month and he has yet to sign for another club as speculations continue to persist over his next destination.
Shittu’s place has now been taken by Ukraine-based Dele Adeleye, who will now likely partner skipper Joseph Yobo in the heart of the back four against the Syli Stars in Conakry on October 10.
There is a first-time call-up for Spain-based midfielder Sunday Stephen, who has featured for Spain at Under-20 level.
The other highlight of the latest Nigeria squad is the recall of several other players —Taye Taiwo, Obinna Nsofor and Yusuf Ayila.
Fulham midfielder Dickson Etuhu, who missed the opening qualifier against Madagascar earlier this month on account of an ankle injury, has also been picked for the tricky trip to Guinea.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have also got their way and got caretaker coach Austin Eguavoen to call up a record 15 players from the Nigeria Premier League.
