The Zonal Command of Nigeria Customs Service for Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states has adopted a community-based approach in the fight against smuggling.

Alhaji Abdulkadir Hussaini, the Area Comptroller, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Sokoto on Wednesday that the step was part of the efforts of the organisation to frustrate the activities of smugglers. Hussaini said officers in the border areas had been briefed on how the partnership would assist them to arrest smugglers.

“We will do all that we can to get intelligence report on movement of smugglers. I have said it times without number that my area is a no go area for any smuggler as competent officers have been stationed to carry out their constitutional responsibility effectively,” Hussaini said.

He said identified smugglers” routes had been placed on strict surveillance, while community leaders would be used to provide information to that would help in dealing with the problem. Hussaini warned that the service would not spare any arrested smugglers and urged officers and men of the service to rededicate themselves to duty.
