No automatic shirts for Falconets in Falcons, coach

By Ben  Efe
Falcons coach, Eucheria Uche said that she would not rush the girls of the national under-20 team into the senior national squad, in her bid to regain Nigeria’s lost glory in continental women soccer contest.

The Falconets were treated to a sumptuous dinner by President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife Patience in Abuja. This was after the girls made a triumphant return from Germany, where they picked up a silver at the FIFA Under-20 Women World Cup.

Female soccer enthusiasts called for their immediate drafting into the senior team. But Uche a veteran of many international soccer battles with the national team said in an interview that, she already had her own list of players in mind.

“The girls did a good job at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, no doubt. But we cannot call in the entire team. They are all my girls and I know just who among them that can fit into my plans,” said Uche.

Nigeria’s reign as undisputed African women champions was ended by Equatorial Guinea at the 2008 Africa women championship.

After the good outing in Germany by the Falconets, Uche is under pressure to deliver not just at the African Women Championship to be staged in South Africa in October, but also at the Women World Cup next year.

“We are preparing well for the AWC. There is no doubt everyone is looking forward to a good outing, we will do all our best to regain the trophy,” added the coach.

That tournament will be a major test for Uche and her assistants, as it will determine if they can lead the Falcons to the FIFA Women World Cup next year in Germany.
