N100bn bond: NURTW storms Ogun Assemby with fetish pots

By Gbenga Akinwunmi
ABEOKUTA——No fewer than 200 members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Ogun State, stormed the Ogun State House of Assembly with ritual meals (ebo) to protest the refusal of the House to approve  the proposed N100billion bond

The members drawn from the 20 Local Government Areas of the State besieged the Assembly at about 12:00 pm with three pots of sacrifice and placards.

This development  prompted the indefinite suspension  of the plenary session by the members of the House. A public notice to this effect was signed by the Clerk of the House, Biodun Badejo, copies of which were made available to newsmen.

The notice reads, “In accordance with the House rule 5(1-3), The Rt. Hon. Speaker, has suspended the resumption of plenary till further notice. The speaker regrets any inconveniences this will cause but assured that plenary will be convened as soon as the atmosphere in the House is conducive.”

The House had gone on recess since July 2, 2010 and was supposed to resume its session yesterday before the lawmakers were confronted with the fetish pots.

The over 200 members of the NURTW who stormed the Assembly equally carried placards with various inscriptions such as “G-15 agents of destruction”, “We need the bond for development of this state”, “Other states have obtained bonds,” among others.

The leader of the group, Mr. Lukman Ayuba, who volunteered to speak with newsmen was not allowed to do so as members of the NURTW continued to shout BOND!, BOND!, BOND!.

Aside the sacrifice that was taken to the Assembly, the union members equally threw  hundreds of raw eggs at the Assembly to express their displeasure at the continued refusal of members of the House particularly those in the G-15 to approve of the bond.
