Residents of Edepie suburb in the heart of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital were yesterday shocked by the bizarre discovery of the lifeless remains of a day old baby boy in a dustbin.
The remains of the deceased child concealed in a cellophane bag provoked wailing in the neighbourhood especially among women many of whom rained curses on the supposed heartless mother of the abandoned baby.
Our correspondent who witnessed the development yesterday morning along Chief Okpoi Street observed that the umbilical cord on the baby was still intact.
The fair and hairy child, sources told Saturday Vanguard might have been abandoned alive in the dustbin in the night by its  mother shortly after birth, thinking it would be picked up by a good Samaritan.
Suspicion that the deceased child might have been abandoned alive by the mother was further reinforced by the presence of a wrapper left behind ostensibly to attract passersby.
But an early morning rainfall yesterday in the capital might have dealt a fatal blow on the child as it is believed to have died from undue exposure to the elements.
A resident who spoke anonymously said “I have strong conviction that this innocent child was abandoned in that dustbin by the mother hoping that it will be rescued by a good Samaritan “.
