Babangida also dismissed speculations that he was planning to leave the PDP and insisted that he would pursue his presidential ambition on the party’s platform. He urged the citizenry to make the election more participatory to deepen democracy.

He spoke in a statement signed by his media spokesman, Prince Kassim Afegbua entitled: “There is no going back on my 2011 presidential election.”

His words: “This is to inform all my numerous associates, friends and supporters nation-wide that I am irrevocably committed to my 2011 presidential aspiration under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

“At no time have I contemplated withdrawing from the race nor change from my party, the PDP. Those who are peddling rumours about my possible withdrawal from the race are at best mischief makers and sycophants who are profitting from the present political scenarios to create unnecessary distractions to me and my overwhelming supporters in my legitimate aspiration to preside over the affairs of this great country through the ballot box.

“I wish to state unequivocally that I will pursue this aspiration to a logical conclusion in fulfilment of my conviction that this great country needs an experienced hand to pilot her affairs.”
