ENUGU— SHELL Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Nigeria, UNN, Nsukka, to build a $1 million International Centre for Environmental Management and Control at Enugu Campus of the university.

The project coming under the Shell Nigeria University Liaison programme, was attracted by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Barth Okolo, as part of the university’s drive to create a positive learning environment for students of the institution.

Project part of Shell’s Corporate Social Responsibity

SPDC, an oil exploration firm in Nigeria, said it would invest an initial $1million to build the two-wing dual floor centre
as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Okolo, led key members of the university management to initial the memorandum and trust deed for the project.

SPDC Managing Director, Mr. Mutiu Sumnonu, who had earlier signed, was represented by Dr. Berti Ozumba , Head of Geological Services and Prof Yinka Ogunkoya, Head, University Liaison.

The centre, which is part of the company’s desire to strengthen its university assistance programme, will be known as Shell Centre for Environmental Management and Control, Shell-CEMAC, and is  expected to be completed by October 2011.
According to Prof Ogunkoya, Shell would in addition to the construction of the one storey building, furnish Shell-CEMAC to international standards.
Speaking on the vision for Shell-CEMAC, Prof Ogunkoya told the UNN management team that the company’s intention was to provide opportunity for the study of environmental management issues at  post-graduate level.
