Enyimba International yesterday topped the Globacom Nigeria Premier League after beating rivals, Kano Pillars 2-1 yesterday at the Enyimba Township Stadium in Aba.
And it was jubilation galore for the teeming fans of the ‘ Peoples Elephants’ when Kalu Uche lifted the trophy to confirm their hard earn win. Enyimba made history as the first Nigerian club side to win the League for a record six times, they finished with 70 points, while Pillars remained at 68 points.
Enyimba needed a draw to cement their lead on the league table. But they went all out to score twice in each half and then held firm, in face of a strong fight back by Pillars who had most of the possession.
“We did all our best to win and played good football today, but we did not win,†said Pillars captain Abdul Wasiu Sowemimo.
Enyimba players had no reason to lose the match. They were paid all their outstanding allowances and this put them in a good mood to beat Pillars.
“We give thanks to God, he made it possible for us to win today. We dedicate this win to all our fans all around the world.
“We were not under any pressure today, we played our normal game and won,†said Enyimba captain Kalu Uche.
