•Officials say Gov. Chime annulled election, governor’s aide reacts

Christian Chukwu, arguably, the greatest sports ambassador from Enugu State, on July 15,.2010 won election in the state to run for the Nigeria Football Federation elections.
The election was free and fair.

On the day of election, Dominic Nwobodo, his senior and a prolific striker in Enugu Rangers in his time, stepped down for Chukwu, so did Barrister Iloje, a deputy Local Government Chairman. But Bethel Onyeriri, a former commissioner for sports stood firm and preferred votes to be cast.  Chukwu beat him.

The next thing would have been for the winner to be nominated by the state for the NFF elections. And going by the zoning understanding in the South East, the winner would have a bright chance of getting elected since it is the time for Enugu and Abia States to present candidates on board of the federation. Amanze Uchegbulam, Imo State and Obinna Ogba,  Ebonyi State were elected on the current board four years ago.

It is now the time for Enugu and Abia going by the zoning understanding and Chukwu had started cracking his brain on what he would introduce on board before the shocker came. They held back his nomination,  alleging a directive from Governor Sullivan Chime.

“They just told me that the state governor Sullivan Chime feels that Iloje should represent the state and that’s why they have held back my nomination from the state,” Chukwu said on phone.

We gathered that when the news reached Iloeje, he reminded them that he had withdrawn for Christian Chukwu and would like the matter to be left so. But the FA led by Ofor Okenwa informed that a commissioner called to warn that Chukwu must not be presented as that would amount to flouting the directive of the governor. Iloeje now says he is in no place to go against official directive.

However,  the reaction of Chukwudi Achife, Senior Special Assistant to the governor showed that  some officials might have been dropping the governor’s name to annul Chukwu’s election.

“The governor has never interfered in such matters. It is frivolous and untrue to say he annulled Chukwu’s election. The governor was not in the state at the time of the election and couldn’t have influenced it in favour of anybody,” Achife told our Regional Head, Tony Edike in Enugu.

Did Governor Chime actually annul Chaukwu’s election? The investigation is on in Enugu.

“I really don’t know what to say. Rangers were doing well with me as coach when they told me that  the Governor wanted me out. Since they said it was the governor, I couldn’t do anything. Now, I have been elected to run for the NFF election and they are telling me that the governor has directed that I shouldn’t go.

I don’t know what I have done wrong. I think that I have served my state and country to the best of my ability and I do not deserve this type of treatment. Are they asking me to change my state of origin? I still can’t believe the governor is behind this but that’s what the state FA has told me,” Chukwu , one time Eagles captain and coach lamented at the weekend.
