ONITSHA — There was a rowdy session yesterday at Anambra State House of Assembly as lawmakers vehemently opposed the accelerated hearing of a proposed amendment bill that sought to relocate the main campus of the state’s University of Science and Technology from Alor to Awka.
Former governor of the state, Dr Chris Ngige, had during his administration, sited the main campus at Alor which was passed into law by the same House of Assembly.
But yesterday, the lawmakers in an attempt to further review and amend the law establishing the university, almost ended up in a free-for-all as members shouted on top of their voices and pointed fingers at each other,
However, the House passed the law with a yes vote by 20 legislators against 4 members from Idemili North and South and Onitsha South I, leaving the University with its main campus at Uli and other campuses at Igbariam and Awka.
One of the lawmakers, representing Onitsha South I, Mr Muokwe Chinedu, who vehemently opposed the proposed amendment bill and almost engaged some of his colleagues in a free-for-all, said he was not satisfied with the way the bill was handled in a hurry as if there was an emergency.
