AKURE—EIGHT dare-devil armed robbers Thursday killed at least five persons, including a nursing mother while robbing two new generation banks located about 300 metres away from a Police Station in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

In the operation that lasted about one hour, six other persons were seriously injured and many vehicles damaged while their owners scrabbled for safety and an unspecified amount carted away from the two banks.

The hoodlums who were led by a lady said to be about 23-years-old came with a bagful of dynamite which they used in blowing off the security doors of the banks before heading to the banks vaults.

Reacting to the development, the State Police PRO, Adeniran Aremu said only two persons were killed in the incident and that the police command has restored normalcy to the state capital.

Because of the development, Governor Olusegun Mimiko yesterday cut short an official trip and summoned all security chiefs in the state to an emergency meeting where he gave them a marching order to track down the robbers and review the state security strategies forthwith.

Mimiko described the robbery attack as an unfortunate incident and an undue infraction on the peace that has been enjoyed in the state since the inception of the present administration

However, Vanguard gathered that the nursing mother who was killed had her baby strapped on her back when she was shot at close range by one of the robbers who thought she was a security guard attached to one of the banks.

It was learnt that the deceased came to the bank to withdraw money  and was about entering the bank when the hoodlums arrived but decided to hid in the security room built close to the entrance of the bank.

One of the robbers sighted her and shot her head thereby blowing off her brain. She died instantly and the baby was removed and taken to the police station by sympathizers.
Her vehicle marked BG 95RSH brought to the bank is still parked at the entrance of the bank.

Meanwhile as early as 10am yesterday when the robbers invaded the banks which are located close to one another gun shots were heard in Oba Adesida road, Arakale and Ilemo streets which is off Oba Adesida road leaving residents to ran helter-shelter for their lives.
