Bayelsa State governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, has thrown his weight behind Chief Victor Rumson Baribote’s quest to join the Board of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

Hon. Samson Ogboku, Chief of staff to the Bayelsa state governor disclosed this in a release made available to the media.

According to him, the sports loving governor is happy with the achievements of the Bayelsa United chairman with the club.

The governor was particularly happy with Baribote whom he said brought Bayelsa United from obscurity to national prominence. He noted that prior to his becoming chairman of the club, Bayelsa United were not doing well in the Nigeria Premier League, but soon after he took over two seasons ago, the Yenagoa-based outfit won the league trophy and also debuted in the African Confederation Cup where they distinguished themselves.

Considering these sterling qualities, Ogboku said the governor is convinced that given a greater challenge, Baribote will perform, adding that the NPL Board needs a man of such calibre.

It could be recalled that the Bayelsa United chairman had last week in Abuja, received the endorsement of Premier League clubs from the South-South zone. Four of the five premier league clubs from the zone endorsed his candidacy in an election conducted at Chida Hotels.

Also, stakeholders in the zone had at an earlier meeting held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, thrown their weight behind Bayelsa State, resolving that the state will produce the zone’s NPL Board member, while Rivers State got the ticket for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
