Former Nigerian international, Friday Ekpo has predicted a bright Nations Cup campaign for Nigeria, saying that the Eagles could go all the way to the final of the continental fiesta.

The former national team midfield pearl said “I believe coach Amodu Shaibu has his plans and the Nigerians already made their mark during the qualifiers; going through the entire campaign without losing a match.”

He said the Nations Cup draw had made it easy for the Nigerian team particularly when they were pitched alongside former group opponents in the qualifiers, Mozambique.

Ekpo believes the Eagles have a psychological edge over Mozambique. “We played Mozambique in the qualifiers and claimed four out of a possible six points. It does not mean that they were a bad side. That is a team to look out for. Benin is an unknown quantity while Egypt are the defending champions. We know their strength. We should not find it difficult getting information about Egypt, Mozambique is the real threat given what they played against us in the qualifiers,” Ekpo said.

The former midfield maestro would, however,  not agree with coach Amodu Shuaibu over the issue of players from the domestic league making the national team.

“I am disappointed in Amodu over the fate of players from the domestic league. How can Amodu invite only three of them to the Nations Cup camp?” Ekpo asked, saying that he expected more from the coach than the three he invited.

“This would have brought out the best from his foreign based professionals who would have naturally felt threatened by the presence of the home-based players.”
