THE University of Lagos International School is embarking on massive generation of fund required to execute capital projects for improvement of existing facilities, according to Otunba Dipo Dina, chairman, PTA of the school, at a press briefing in Lagos, yesterday, attended also by Professor Bidmo’s Chairman Management Board, Dr. Oladipo, acting Principal, Staff and other PTA executive officers.

He said that since the current PTA Executive Committee came on board on 22nd November, 2008, after taking over from Major-General Emmanuel Abisoye (rtd) led Exco which lasted for over 12 years, the situation was studied and thereafter charted a new way forward.

“We have taken bold and positive steps in collaboration with the University, School Management Board, Teachers, Parents and Students to move the school forward to the next higher level”.

Dina noted that the school has been doing very well in Academics, Sports, and Extra Curricular activities even with the present infrastructural facilities available at the school. The current PTA Exco is convinced that with improvement in the infrastructural facilities available to the school, “there would definitely be marked improvement in the overall performance of the students and the school as a whole”.

He disclosed that they have a number of project intended to be executed from funds to be raised at a funding raising dinner slated for Friday 30th October, 2009, at Multipurpose Hall A University of Lagos, for a total amount of N250,000,000 (Two Hundred and Fifty Million Naira).

The Special Guest of Honour is Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State. Other important personalities for the fund raising dinner are the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Professor Utuama, AsiwajuBola Tinubu, former Lagos governor, Emmanuel Ijewere, Mr. Jim Ovia, Lt-General Theophilus Danjuma (rtd), Chief Kessington Adebutu, to mention a few.

Dina listed some of the project to include Dinning and Multipurpose Hall, remodeling and upgrade of toilet facilities for students, construction of new toilets for visitors and school food vendors, provision of modern equipment for woodwork, metalwork, basic electronics and applied electricity workshops.

Others are construction of a block of classrooms, provision of modern instructional multi-media equipment such as projectors, interactive boards and public address systems. Provision of modern sports facilities, purchase of 200pcs Desktop Computers and UPS for the Computer Room, Construction and tarring of the school’s internal road networks and parking lots, industrial borehole and installation of water treatment plant, Landscaping and beautification of the school compound, provision of a 400kva generator, construction of the main gate and security house, closed circuit TV monitoring equipment, window unit air-conditioners in all classrooms, laboratories and staff offices.

He acknowledged that the University of Lagos which owns the school does its best to support the school, “but the University has so many competing needs to be taken care of from the scarce and limited resources at its disposal.”Since a lot still needs to be done, the parent decided not to sit down and leave everything to the university.

“All these culminated in the need to look for external ways of funding the intended upgrade of the school’s facilities.”Dina appealed to philanthropic people, captains of industry, kind, generous and education-loving Nigerians, parents and old students to come and contribute their own quota in moving the school to the next level.

So far, the PTA chairman has counted the achievements of his Exco since November 22, 2009 saying that in the past eleven months, twenty-two (22) Exco meetings and one (1) General Meeting have been held.“These is no Exco in ISL PTA history since inception that has even achieved such a great feat. We have been able to do this because we believe we needed to build our innovative ideas.”

The current PTA leadership has the following amongst others:
*carrying out some repair works in the classrooms, school building and other buildings within the school premises;
*painting of the entire school complex interior and exterior as well as the fence.

This is the first time the entire school compound would be re-painted and redecorated since the school was established 28 years ago;
*Black(chalk) boards being used since inception of the schools had been replaced with White Magnetic Boards to ensure that children are taught with the most modern teaching aids.

Dina revealed that there will be ISL “Hall of Fame” which is an area specifically carved out, designed and decorated, and would be easily accessible, conspicuous and open to all who enter the Dining and Multipurpose Hall.Individual donors in distinct categories would be given Distinguished Support Plaques and in addition, their names would be inscribed in the school’s “Hall of Fame”.

There will be corporate section of the school’s “Hall of Fame” for Corporate Donors, who would be given Corporate Distinguished Support Plaques and the names of such Corporate bodies, organisations or institutions would be inscribed in the corporate section.

Also any sole financier who singularly build a School Block, Main Gate and Security House or any other building for the school would have the school block or construction job completed named after him, her or the organisation.
