The sum of N63m has been earmarked for the organisation of this year’s Governor’s Cup Tennis Futures, serving off on Monday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

Disclosing this yesterday, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Pius Akinyelure, said that $80 000 of the budgeted amount, has been set aside to take care of prize monies of players, who would playing in the tournament.

He noted that this year’s tournament was witnessing a significant increase in financial commitment towards the competition which is in its ninth year, owing to the coning onboard of emerging telecommunications firm, Etisalat and First City Monument Bank, alonside, traditional partners like Julius Berger.

While lauding the sponsors for their support, Akinyelure admonished Nigerian players to maximize the opportunity that has been offered them to scoop some ATP and WTA ranking points.

“This tournament is designed for players progress, especially, our own players and we are encouraging our own boys and girls to come out en masse to participate, not just for the fun but to get ranking points.

“We are expecting a full house here as players from Holland, Croatia, France, USA, Morocco, Argentina, Australia, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Czech Republic, Ghana and Switzerland, have already confirmed their participation in the tournament”, he added.
Also speaking, the first vice-President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Yemi Owoseni, said that Nigerian players should not fluff the opportunity of bagging ranking points at the tournament.

“Our players are the ones that this tournament was conceived for and we want to see them excel and hope that they would do well. It would be tough but it is possible to go far if they believe and put in the extra push”, said Owoseni.
