By Sola Ogundipe
The G-16 Heads of Regulatory Agencies has given a thumbs-up to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), for its leadership role in ensurimg high standard and good quality of drugs.

The accolades were given  recently during the just concluded summit of the world’s top heads of food and drugs regulatory agencies held in Quebec, Canada.

Director General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii who was at the summit revealed that his counterparts  in 14 other participating countries were  genuinely impressed with Nigeria’s frontline role in the battle against counterfeit drugs and other substandard regulated products.

The summit was geared towards addressing the lingering problem of swine flu, strains of resistant and abuse of anti-biotic drugs as well as fake drugs.

The G-16 Heads of Regulatory Agencies will henceforth constantly exchange information and share ideas on emerging health hazards from food and drugs.

Orhiii noted that the world is working closely to address issues of common health concerns associated with food and drugs.

He said the summit was quite rewarding as it brought to the fore different countries’ experiences. For instance, it was revealed that in Brazil, apples treated with anti biotics resulted in drug resistance in that country. The next summit comes up in London next year to review the group’s progress.
