Agege area of Lagos was yesterday thrown into pandemonium following rumour of an ethnic clash between Hausa and Yoruba.

The rumour followed the alleged killing of a Yoruba man by an Hausa cart-pusher, during a dispute over the cart-pusher’s outright refusal to dump the refuse in his cart near a refuse dump at the Oniwaya area of Agege, with a young man who was identified as Segun Ogunbiyi.

One account said cart-pushers were always harassed by miscreants who usually demanded money before they were allowed to disposed their refuse at the refuse dump while another version said cart-pushers were disallowed as the dump site was over-filled and spilling to the roadside, thereby heightening the traffic situation and constituting an environmental nuisance.

A verbal confrontation between the cart-pusher, one Chigago Busari and Segun reportedly ensued and degenerated into a fight during which the cart-pusher allegedly stabbed Segun in the neck.

The 39-year-old Segun, an indigene of Ilogbo-Ota, Ogun State, was said to have slumped and died before reaching the hospital.

A mob was said to have descended on the cart-pusher, and beat him to pulp. The mob was reportedly about setting him ablaze when policemen from Isokoko Division arrived the scene and saved the situation.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, said the suspect was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

Mba, however, corrected the belief by residents in the area that it was an ethnic crisis, saying, “the case has no religious or ethnic colouration but that of two adults that were engaged in a fight. The command has taken measures to ensure hoodlums do not hijack the situation to cause trouble in the state.

“There is absolutely no cause for alarm as the situation has been taken care of and the suspect taken to the hospital because we want him alive so as to successfully carry out our investigation.”
