Public Mobilization and Awareness Committee for the 2009 Under-17 World Cup has decried the lateness in mobilising Nigerians for the cadet games coming up in Nigeria between October 24 and November 10, 2009.

Chairman of the committee, Dr Rafiu Ladipo told journalists in Abuja Wednesday after the meeting of the committee that the slow start on mobilising Nigerians could be detrimental to the success of the championship. He therefore, appealed to the Local Organising Committee (LOC) led by Mainasara Iloh to expedite action on the release of funds for the various committees for them to swing into action.

“Many Nigerians still do not know that Nigeria is hosting the Under-17 World Cup in less than two months,” Ladipo laments. “In fact, a policeman who saw the ‘support 2009’ sticker on my car asked ne what the sticker is about. When I told him that Nigeria is hosting the World Cup he laughed and said is it not South Africa hosting the World Cup again? There are so many Nigerians in the dark like that.

“It’s worrisome because we have just 57 days to the kick-off and we have to start the real action of mobilising Nigerians now. I’m therefore appealing to the LOC to release funds so that we can create the necessary awareness.”

The committee has line up a whole lot of activities like road show and music carnival in all the host cities as well as a trophy tour and  circulating over two million national flags and five million car stickers across the country.
