Enugu – The Enugu state 2009 tree planting campaign was launched yesterday, with a call on the people of the state to plant trees as part of their contributions to the ongoing efforts by the government to beautify the state and boost her economy.

Wife of the state Governor, Mrs. Clara Chime, who performed the flag-off ceremony at Okpara Square Enugu, said the state’s Green Project, which was launched last year is aimed at capturing the essence and attendant benefits of economic trees, indigenous fruits trees, forest trees, exotic and other trees so as to beautifying the state and increase agricultural production.

She said the project, which was also aimed at preventing gully erosion and deforestation, is part of government’s effort to address the concern for climate, as well as to ensure sustainable agriculture and effective environmental management.

Mrs. Chime, who commended the efforts of the Enugu State Green Project team and other stakeholders in the project for their efforts towards the realization of government’s objective, however, called on all citizens and residents to ensure that “whenever one tree is cut for any reason, ten more are planted.”
