Succour for Local Government Workers
The hope of every worker is that at the end of the month, he would get his salary for the work done. But in some rare and pain laden situation, workers are owed months and getting the salary was no longer guaranteed. The situation assumed a crisis dimension in the country that the federal government had to bend backwards to give bailout funds to state governments in an era where payment of salaries was regarded as one of the achievements of government. The case of Delta State was a rare exception as Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and his team had to invent means to make sure that salaries of civil servants were not owed. But the case of local council workers in Delta State was a different ball game as local councils administration, the third tier of administration had to owe councils workers for up to seven months. The problem was not that of the state government but the inability of the council chairmen to set their priorities right.
