One person is feared dead, several others robbed and wounded as hoodlums hiding under protest over currency redesign hardship attack residents, and motorists in Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has asked the All Progressives Congress, APC, to take full responsibility for the chaos of the implementation of its policies, including the naira redesign, which has unleashed hardship on Nigerians.

“CBN’s naira redesign policy is senseless… CBN deceived Buhari and the intention behind it was to stop the elections.”

Works and Housing Minister, Mr Babatunde Fashola, and his Finance, Budget and National Planning counterpart, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, yesterday, lamented that the Federal Government’s Naira redesign policy is hurting Nigerians, with Ahmed saying President Muhammadu Buhari was unhappy with the hardship Nigerians are facing.

The finance minister added that the new policy is timely and required to curb corruption, adding that there have been positive sides to the policy, evident in the huge mop-up of idle funds.

He said, “It will be very difficult for people to get the new naira notes till after the elections because there is a hidden agenda.”

Against the backdrop of complaints by the banking public that banks are not dispensing enough of the redesigned Naira notes the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele, has said that a total of 500 million units of the newly redesigned currency notes were ordered from the minting company.
