Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which signals the beginning of Lent. Lent is a solemn season when Christians, especially of the orthodox fold, engage in fasting (some denominations have already commenced their fasting), abstinence, repentance, moderation, mortification of the flesh and almsgiving.
