Vanguard reports that 401 suspected cases have been reported to the state Ministry of Health, with an increasing number of severe gastroenteritis cases across multiple local government areas, LGAs, in the state.

The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Lagos State has risen to 24, with 35 confirmed cases, even as 417 cases are suspected in 20 local government areas of the state

The UN World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced a spike in cholera in several regions of the world, with almost 195,000 cases and over 1,900 deaths reported in 24 countries since the start of this year.

AS cholera outbreak ravages some States, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has swung into action to carry out water analysis in order to safeguard Nigerians and curtail the spread, which already the disease had killed 30 people.

According to her, some of the preventive measures would include: ensuring safe drinking water by boiling, chlorinating safe bottle water, maintaining proper sanitation, and safely disposing of faeces.

A public health disease expert, Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, has blamed the root cause of the current cholera outbreak in Nigeria on the lack of proper sanitation and inadequate healthcare infrastructure, saying that, “attributing the outbreak to rainfall is misleading and unscientific”.

Abayomi also disclosed that there are 17 confirmed cases out of 350 suspected cases and 15 deaths so far.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health, on Saturday, confirmed 350 suspected cases of cholera in 29 wards across multiple LGAs in the state, with 17 confirmed cases and 15 deaths.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says recurrent cholera outbreaks in Nigeria are critically affecting children and the population at large.

She explained that cholera is highly infectious and can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea with severe dehydration, adding that it may be associated with nausea, profuse vomiting, and fever.
