The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal and State governments to urgently put in place measures to effectively check the outbreak of cholera in the country.

She said the threat of cholera outbreaks in some neighbouring states has mandated Oyo State government to put proactive measures in place.

“We have equipped our healthcare workers with the necessary training and resources to ensure a swift and effective response to any potential outbreaks.”

“As far as Kogi is concerned, we had only two cases of cholera. Until people report it, samples taken for test and confirmation obtained by undergoing culture in the laboratory, we may not know the other cases.”

To ensure an effective and sustainable response to the cholera outbreak in the country, the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, AMSN, has called for swift and decisive action to contain the ongoing outbreak. 

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Southwest Zone is to embark on an awareness campaign to sensitise the public on how to curb the spread of Cholera.

“We were able to supply Kirikiri medium prison with intravenous fluids, infection prevention and other health consumables. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has donated 10,000 doses of pharmaceuticals which have been delivered to the prison to support prison health facilities with prevention strategies for about 3,200 inmates if required. Immediate water and sanitation issues have been corrected and there is ongoing inspections of other correctional facilities in the State .”

Federal Government has promised to curtail the spread of cholera through effective hygiene and sanitation practices in the country.
