Owie faults Jega on deployment of soldiers for polls

BENIN—FORMER Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Rowland Owie, yesterday, disagreed with the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over his comment that the Army was not empowered to monitor the forthcoming general elections. He expressed fears that members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, who will serve as ad-hoc staff of INEC during the elections and even voters may suffer if the Army was not on hand to provide adequate security, adding that the comments made by the INEC boss indicated that he does not care about the lives of his staff.

Politicians scaring investors from Nigeria —Uduaghan

WARRI—GOVERNOR Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State, yesterday, expressed worry about the trend of the campaigns for the March 28 presidential election, saying that politicians were frightening investors away from the country with their inciting statements. Uduaghan, who spoke at a town hall meeting with professional groups and civil society organisations in Delta South and Central senatorial districts of the state, said: “Campaigns should be redirected to issues, not personalities and we should not make life enemies with our campaigns.”

Uduaghan cautions against disenfranchising voters

ASABA—Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to ensure that no Nigerian is disenfranchised in the forthcoming elections. Uduaghan, when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, National Vice Chairman, South-South zone, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh and the zonal executive members visited him in Asaba, yesterday, said there were lots of Nigerians with valid temporary voters’ cards, TVCs, who have not been able to collect their permanent voters’ cards, PVCs.

Enugu House uncovers N600m scam at ENSUBEB

ENUGU—The Chairman of Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB, Miss Nneka Onuora, yesterday, told the state House of Assembly, how the board awarded N600 million contract for the rehabilitation of 500 primary schools, and paid the full contract sum without supervising the job. The House was also told how water supply in the state was leased out to an unknown company for 25 years by Enugu State Water Corporation.

Dangote group hopeful $9bn refinery kicks off by 2017

A new $9 billion oil refinery producing 500,000 barrels per day being developed by Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is expected to come on stream in Nigeria by 2017, a senior Dangote Group official said yesterday. The refinery, to be located in Lagos, will cut Nigeria reliance on international markets for refined petroleum products, which constitute imports of more than 80 percent of the nation’s fuel needs. The lack of sufficient refining capacity is a major handicap in Nigeria.

Gov Yero appeals to Kaduna JUSUN to call off strike

Governor Mukhtar Yero of Kaduna State has appealed to the state chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, to call off its ongoing strike to ensure normalcy in the Judiciary in the state. Speaking during the swearing- in ceremony of Justice Nasiru Umar Sadiq as judge of the state High Court, Yero said the demands of JUSUN can not be resolved through the ongoing strike, hence the need for immediate suspension of the action.

Abia govt warns ex-gov Kalu over inciting statements

UMUAHIA — ABIA State government has warned the former governor of the state, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, to stop making unguarded statements capable of setting the state ablaze. The former governor had in an interview with journalists alleged that Governor Theodore Orji used the military to intimidate him not to vote in 2011, and warned that if such was tried in the coming elections “our people will burn down the state” and that would be the end of Governor Orji’s administration.
