As concerns around food security and agricultural resilience mount in Nigeria, one innovative startup is taking decisive steps to protect a vital part of the rural economy — livestock.

Doorcas Africa, a fast-rising agritech company founded by a team of young african scientists and entrepreneurs, is transforming livestock care by merging data, artificial intelligence, and grassroots engagement. Their mission: to drastically reduce preventable animal deaths among smallholder farmers.

“We are using tech to build the future of livestock health in Nigeria,” said Odole Abayomi, co-founder of Doorcas Africa. “No farmer should lose their animals because they didn’t get the right information at the right time.”

The challenge is widespread. Each year, thousands of farmers across the country lose animals to diseases that could have been avoided with timely detection or simple vaccination. The problem is worsened by limited access to veterinary care, especially in underserved rural communities.

Doorcas Africa is bridging this gap through a digital platform that delivers life-saving information directly to farmers via web and WhatsApp. The system provides real-time veterinary advice, vaccine reminders, and disease alerts—ensuring farmers get critical support at their fingertips.

But technology is only part of the story. The startup also trains local veterinary ambassadors who work directly with farmers on the ground. Meanwhile, Doorcas’s AI tools analyze incoming data to detect emerging threats, offering early warning signals across entire regions.

This blended approach—technology at scale and community engagement at the grassroots—has helped the startup gain traction globally. Since launching, Doorcas Africa has participated in international programs like the Fishbowl Challenge, BeChangeMaker, and Start Global. It has also secured funding through platforms such as the USPF Hackathon, University of Cape Town’s eTrack Program, and START Global.

With climate change, population pressures, and food insecurity placing more strain on Nigerian agriculture, Doorcas Africa is offering a glimpse into a smarter, more responsive future—one where livestock thrive and farmers stay empowered through innovation.
