SOKOTO — In a bold move toward energy independence and economic revitalization, the Sokoto State Government has launched the distribution of solar-powered electronic equipment to over 5,000 small-scale businesses across the state.
The initiative, rolled out as part of the second anniversary celebrations of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration, aims to address the persistent power supply challenges plaguing local enterprises and to promote sustainable energy solutions.
Speaking during the distribution exercise held in Sokoto North and Sokoto South local government areas, the Commissioner for Energy and Petroleum Resources, Sanusi Ibrahim Danfulani, emphasized that the program is part of the state’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on the unreliable national grid and to stimulate grassroots economic growth.
According to a statement from the Ministry’s spokesperson, Nasir Abubakar Kiri, the exercise will be expanded to all 23 local government areas, in line with Governor Aliyu’s nine-point innovative agenda.
“This initiative is about more than just providing equipment—it’s about transforming livelihoods,” Danfulani stated. “Access to reliable power is critical for small businesses to thrive, and this solar-powered solution gives them that opportunity.”
Director of Renewable Energy, Muhammad Garba, called on beneficiaries to use the equipment judiciously, stressing the long-term benefits of adopting renewable energy. He noted that the initiative reinforces the state government’s commitment to exploring clean energy alternatives to meet Sokoto’s electricity needs.
The distributed kits include solar panels, solar-powered standing fans, four solar-powered valves, stabilizers, and other essential components tailored to support small business operations.
To ensure transparency and proper targeting, a meticulous shop-to-shop distribution was conducted by the ministry, ensuring that only eligible businesses benefited from the gesture.
Several beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Governor Aliyu, describing the initiative as a timely intervention that demonstrates genuine concern for the wellbeing of the people and the economic progress of the state.
In a related development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has signed into law the Sokoto State Electricity Act 2024. The new legislation establishes the Sokoto State Electricity Regulatory Commission, which will oversee the regulation and development of the state’s electricity sector in line with the 2023 national electricity law that decentralizes power sector governance.
With this legal framework in place, Sokoto joins other proactive states in asserting greater control over its energy future, positioning itself to attract investments and ensure more reliable power delivery to its residents and businesses.
