In an effort to expand digital access and bridge the information divide, the National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, and the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, NIGCOMSAT, have unveiled “The Big Picture”, a transformative reinvention of Nigeria’s Digital Switchover, DSO, project.

Endorsed by the Federal Government, the initiative leverages Nigeria’s sovereign satellite technology, NIGCOMSAT-1R, to deliver universal digital broadcasting to every part of the country.

NBC Director-General Barr. Charles Ebuebu and NIGCOMSAT Managing Director Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen explained that the satellite-first approach eliminates the need for costly transmission towers, accelerating the rollout of digital television by over 65 percent.

Ebuebu said: “This project isn’t just about digitizing television; it’s about ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in the digital age. The Big Picture aims to provide crystal-clear digital TV through affordable satellite dishes and hybrid Internet-enabled devices.

“Over 10 million Nigerian households with existing DVB-S2-compatible TVs or set-top boxes can immediately access 100+ free-to-air channels, including educational, cultural, and Nollywood content.

“To enhance affordability, NBC will collaborate with CREDICORP to offer near zero-interest financing for five million DTH/Internet-enabled reception devices. The project also introduces a mobile streaming app to ensure that youth, 70 percent of whom primarily consume media on smartphones, can access content on the go.

“The hybrid set-top boxes will feature voice search, parental controls, and pre-installed streaming apps, catering to Nigeria’s youth-dominated demographic.

“Additionally, 40 percent of available channels will be reserved for independent and regional broadcasters, ensuring minority languages and local cultures are represented.

To support the transition, the Federal Government has waived satellite carriage fees for 18 months. NBC is also partnering with global analytics firm GARB to implement a real-time audience measurement system projected to grow ad revenue by 300 percent by 2026.

“With support from NTA and private studios, over 1,000 hours of new content will be produced monthly across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Local manufacturing of devices is expected to create more than 20,000 jobs, supporting the government’s Buy-Nigeria initiative.

A 24/7 multilingual support center and 15,000 trained technicians will provide nationwide assistance, while grassroots “Digital Ambassadors” will drive awareness.

“The Big Picture represents a paradigm shift. We’re not just digitizing TV, we’re empowering content, connectivity, and culture for all Nigerians,” Ebuebu added.
