Sheffield-trained researcher launches research prize for Nigerian undergraduate food scientists

By Izunna Tochukwu Ubaka

Maduabuchi Daniel Uluocha, a distinguished alumnus of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and a Master’s graduate in Food and Nutrition Sciences from Sheffield Hallam University, United Kingdom, has launched the NexEdge Research Scheme, an initiative designed to promote academic excellence and innovative thinking in Nigerian food science education.

At the heart of this initiative is the inaugural Maduabuchi Daniel Uluocha Research Proposal Prize, a prestigious annual award dedicated to recognising the best undergraduate research proposal and oral defence in the Departments of Food Science and Technology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria, with plans to expand to other institutions.

The award includes a research prize that includes funding support, alongside a certificate of excellence, and access to research-based mentorship opportunities, empowering the next generation of food scientists with the resources and guidance to conduct impactful and relevant research.

“This initiative is deeply personal to me,” Uluocha shared. “It is inspired by my academic journey, especially my transformative postgraduate experience in the UK and over five years of research engagement at Reliable Research Consults, Nigeria. I believe in giving back to Nigerian institutions and supporting global early career researchers to thrive on merit, innovation, and rigour.”

The NexEdge Research Scheme has garnered support from several academic leaders, including:

Prof. Charles N. Ishiwu, Head of Department, Food Science and Technology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria.

Significantly, Mr. Izunna Tochukwu Ubaka, a distinguished lecturer in the Department of Food Science and Technology, successfully secured the grant for the institution. His efforts demonstrate a strong commitment to fostering student development, advancing academic excellence, and strengthening research capacity.

This public-private initiative represents a strong model for how Nigerian academics and alumni can meaningfully contribute to the advancement of locally-driven research excellence. It aligns with national and global calls for sustainable development through research and innovation in the food sector.
