A blogger who identifiednhimself as Editor-in-chief of an online news medium, Nurudeen Adegbenro, has been arrested in Lagos State for alleged blackmail.
Adegbenro was arrested by officers from Police FCID, Alagbon on Wednesday morning in Agege immediately after he led worshippers as Imam to observe the early morning Muslims’ prayer at a mosque in Oredapo Street where he lives.
The suspect, according to report, was arrested for allegedly blackmailing Agege Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi.
Adegbenro was accused of opening several social media handles with pseudonyms, with which he allegedly imputed some obnoxious wrong doings to Egunjobi.
Sources said the suspect resorted to trolling the Council Chairman who is also the Otun of Egbaland after the latter declined his request to publicise his(Chairman’s) achievements in office on one website, hotnewsnaija.ng for N200 000.
“He wrote to the Chairman in February 2021 during his first term in office, seeking to publicise his administration’s achievements on one obscure news website, hotnewsnaija.ng.
“The letter is on hotnewsnaija.ng letterhead and he claimed to be the Editor-in-chief.
“But findings by the council information office while carrying out dilligence required before approval would be made proved otherwise. It was discovered that he’s a fake blogger. In fact as we are talking, if you click on the website you would see a disclaimer on him authored by the management of the news medium,” sources declared.
When contacted, FCID PRO, Asp Aminat Mayegun said, “A detailed written petition was submitted to the AIG, FCID Annex, on the 2nd of June 2025 by T.C. Eze Chambers, acting on behalf of Chief Ganiu Kola Egunjobi. The petition concerns a case involving cyberstalking, bullying, scandalous publications, threats to life, incitement of the public, and conduct likely to cause a breakdown of law and order.
“The allegations are made against Mr. Adegbenro Nurudeen and other unidentified individuals, who are said to be using various Facebook and Instagram accounts—as well as those operated by their proxies—to malign, scandalize, threaten, and bully Chief Egunjobi.
“It is further stated in the petition that the cyberstalking began after Mr. Adegbenro allegedly approached Chief Egunjobi, seeking an appointment as his media assistant, which the Chief declined. Following the escalation of these incidents, the matter was referred to the Public Relations Office, and Mr. Adegbenro was subsequently invited for questioning.”
He, however, clarified that he was only invited for questioning and would not be detained it is a bailable offence.
