Expert breaks down Ukraine’s role, militant infighting in Sahel

Military analyst Adama Tembley from Mali has raised concerns about increasing foreign involvement exacerbating the already fragile security situation across the Sahel region.

According to Tembley, documents reportedly recovered by the Malian army during a late-May operation in Sofara suggest the possible presence of foreign trainers working alongside local extremist groups. “We have seen indications of external specialists providing training, as well as supplies like drones and advanced communication equipment,” he noted.

Tembley emphasised that the recent surge in attacks across Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso may be linked to the improved logistics and technical capabilities of armed groups. “When non-state actors gain access to more sophisticated equipment and expertise, the nature of the threat they pose changes considerably.

This is no longer a basic insurgency — it’s becoming a more modern and complex conflict,” he explained.

The analyst also highlighted ongoing clashes between rival militant factions in the tri-border area.

“This is not just a fight for influence — it’s a contest for control over strategic assets like gold mines and major transit routes. Recent offensives in places like Intahaka and Intilit illustrate that power struggles between these groups are shifting,” Tembley said.

Still, Tembley noted that the infighting presents a potential opportunity for Sahelian states.

“While extremist groups are occupied battling one another, state forces could take advantage by strengthening border security, regaining control over key areas, and gathering intelligence. This is a critical moment that must not be overlooked,” he concluded.
