Prominent Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu, former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, and former President Goodluck Jonathan, gathered in Abuja on Thursday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Ambassador Professor Mary N. Lar, the wife of late Solomon Lar, the first National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the first civilian governor of Plateau State.

The event saw the attendance of Senators, members of the House of Representatives, former Plateau State governors, and Hajiya Titi Abubakar, wife of a former vice president, among others.

President Tinubu, represented by Senator Simon Bako Lalong (Plateau South), described Professor Lar as a “woman of virtue, grace, and quiet strength.” He noted that the celebration was not just about her age but also a tribute to her legacy of love, leadership, and service to humanity.

“At 90, Her Excellency remains a symbol of dignity and devotion. As one of the first female professors from Northern Nigeria, she has inspired generations of women and girls across the nation. Many of her students are here today, continuing to apply her lessons for the good of society,” Tinubu said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan commended Professor Lar as a calm and dedicated leader who has made significant contributions to her community and the nation. “At 90, we pray you live to 120 to continue mentoring young girls,” Jonathan remarked.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, hailed her as a “mother in every sense” and an achiever whose support and counsel have been invaluable. He emphasized her role as a champion for the education of the girl child and praised her contributions to society. Mutfwang also announced a donation of ₦50 million for the unveiling of books celebrating her life and achievements.

Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon recalled the warm hospitality he received from Professor Lar and her late husband upon returning from exile. “She is a most deserving and honoured icon, a loving wife to a political titan,” Gowon stated.

In his goodwill message, former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha described Professor Lar as “humanity personified” and a lover of God. He quoted Psalm 91:16, attributing her long life to her faith and prayers for those in authority. “Goodness and mercy shall follow you all the days of your life,” he added.

The celebration marked a significant milestone for Professor Mary Lar, highlighting her enduring impact on education, community development, and national progress.
