The Chief Whip of the Senate and Senator representing Borno North Senatorial District, Distinguished Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Esq.), has sounded the alarm over the recent resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East, describing the security situation as a national emergency that can no longer be ignored.
Rising during plenary on Tuesday under a motion of urgent national importance, Senator Monguno condemned the brutal killings and terror inflicted upon communities in Marte, Gajiram, and surrounding areas in Borno and Yobe States. The attacks, which claimed the lives of over twelve Nigerian soldiers and displaced scores of residents, have renewed fears of an emboldened insurgency.
“These acts of violence are not only reprehensible but represent a direct assault on the peace and sovereignty of our nation,” Senator Monguno stated. “We have lost too many lives—both civilian and military—to remain passive. Immediate and deliberate action is now imperative.”
Monguno, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, called for a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s national security strategy, urging the Federal Government to recalibrate its approach to counterinsurgency operations. He emphasized the need for better equipment, modern warfare technology, and improved intelligence gathering for Nigerian troops operating in high-risk areas.
According to the senator, Nigeria must explore both kinetic and non-kinetic responses, combining military might with psychological operations, economic support, and community engagement to tackle the root causes of terrorism.
He also pressed for swift humanitarian intervention, appealing to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relief bodies to deploy aid to affected communities and assist families displaced by the violence.
The motion received strong backing from senators across party lines, with many lawmakers warning that the insecurity in the North-East could further destabilize the country if left unchecked. The Senate resolved to summon heads of key security agencies for an extensive briefing on the ongoing operations in the region.
Lawmakers emphasized the urgency of a coordinated approach involving all levels of government to address the insecurity not only in Borno and Yobe but in other troubled zones across the country.
Senator Monguno, speaking passionately on behalf of his constituents, reaffirmed his commitment to their protection and well-being. “Our people deserve more than promises—they deserve action, protection, and peace. We must not allow our communities to continue living in fear,” he said.
As Boko Haram’s presence re-emerges with deadly impact, Senator Monguno’s motion is expected to galvanize new energy within both the legislative and executive arms of government to bring an end to the decade-long insurgency plaguing Nigeria’s North-East.
