The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS), has made an appeal for N200 million to sustain its humanitarian projects, as well as the operational costs.
Speaking during the commemoration of the 162nd World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day in Lagos, Chairman of the Lagos branch, Mrs. Adebola Kolawole, said,
“Continued financial, material, and collaborative support breathes life into our mission.
“You are the wind beneath our wings, and your generosity powers our service.
“However, the needs of humanity are vast and ever-growing,” she said.
While acknowledging the support of N10 million, the branch received from the state Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Kolawole emphasised the importance of financial support from both private and public sectors.
“We also respectfully request a yearly government subvention to enhance our operational capacity and reach.
“This support, if granted will greatly bolster our efforts in Lagos state, enabling us to make an even more meaningful impact,” she said.
Also acknowledging a two-acre plot of land donated by traditional leaders in the Ibeju area of the state, she said the site was earmarked for a youth resource centre and residential quarters to host the Annual Youth Leadership Camp.
Reiterating the theme, Kolawole said being on the side of humanity meant being present for those in their darkest moments.
“It means prioritising their needs, and upholding their dignity, regardless of their race, gender, nationality, religion or political beliefs,” she said.
The branch Secretary, Mr Olakunle Lasisi, said the Red Cross played a critical role, in collaboration with the state government, particularly during emergency response and disaster management.
Highlighting the collaborations, Lasisi said: “We have been actively working with LASEMA and other agencies of the government in the area of emergency response.
“The NRCS, Lagos branch has also been very supportive in what would have led to more misfortunes, and touts in Lagos.
“In our Motherless and Abandoned Babies Home, which turned 60 last year, we have over a thousand children that have been adopted,” he said.
He pledged the branch’s commitment to supporting the government, adding that NRCS would not relent in its humanitarian activities.
Lasisi also urged the government to support the Red Cross, particularly with ambulances, so volunteers can respond better to emergencies.
