Pope was a global voice of conscience – Northern CAN

Kaduna – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has joined the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a spiritual father and a global voice of conscience whose life was marked by humility, service, and an unwavering pursuit of peace and justice.

In a statement signed by Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, Chairman of Northern CAN, the Association noted that the Pope’s passing during the sacred Easter season is profoundly symbolic, urging all to embrace the season’s message of hope, sacrifice, and resurrection.

“Easter is a season of renewal—a call to rise above pain and darkness into a new dawn. Pope Francis lived out this calling through his relentless compassion for the poor, advocacy for interfaith dialogue, and efforts to foster reconciliation among nations. His passing during this season invites us as a nation to pause and reflect on our moral direction and the need for national rebirth,” the statement read.

The Association highlighted the ongoing suffering in parts of Nigeria, including Plateau, Benue, Borno, and other states plagued by insecurity, violence, and terrorism. It emphasized that the continued bloodshed, displacement, and destruction of communities should never be accepted as the norm.

“We therefore call on the Federal Government, the governors of affected states, security agencies, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to see this moment as a sacred opportunity to renew their commitment to protecting lives and restoring peace across Nigeria. The urgency of the situation demands unified action, genuine political will, and a return to justice and accountability at all levels of leadership,” it said.

Northern CAN urged Nigerians of all faiths to draw inspiration from Pope Francis’ legacy and to work collectively toward healing and unity.

“Let the memory and legacy of Pope Francis inspire us to reject indifference and apathy. Let us rise together—Christians, Muslims, and people of all faiths and backgrounds—to heal our land and restore the dignity of every Nigerian citizen,” the statement concluded.

The Association also extended prayers to the Catholic Church, the global Christian community, and the Nigerian nation, hoping that the Pope’s passing would spark renewed determination to build a just, secure, and united country.
