The Executive Vice Chairman, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, NASENI, Mr Khalil Sulaiman has disclosed the agency is focused on developing home-grown solution to innovation and manufacturing to boost patronage of made in Nigeria goods.

This is as its host focus group engagement with key stakeholders in Osun State with a view to explore pathways for advancing Nigeria’s industrial base through innovation, research commercialisation, and strategic collaboration.

In his welcome address, Sulaiman, who was represented Deputy Director, Technical Services at the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI), Engr. Olusegun Odejobi, reiterated NASENI’s strategic shift from research to the commercialisation of locally developed technologies and products.

According to him, through collaboration, we work closely with government agencies, startups, entrepreneurs, and fabricators. Whether you are an innovator, a dreamer, an entrepreneur, or a hands-on builder – we are all threads in the fabric of Nigeria’s sustainable development. It is our collective effort that will make the difference for our beloved nation. NASENI is open to collaborations partnerships – not just from the head office, but through our centers nationwide.

“We have developed a growing range of products that respond directly to our local needs. From solar-powered irrigation pumps at the heart of the Irrigate Nigeria project recently launched in Bauchi State, to NASENI laptops and mobile devices, the CNG conversion programme, E-tricycle, electric vehicle, and many others – many of these products are already in the market, meeting Nigerians’ needs and helping the country reduce her importation bills. This is a clear pointer to NASENI’s paradigm shift – from emphasis on research to a strong focus on manufacturing and commercialization of locally made products.

“When others look outside, we need to look inward. The problems are here. The opportunities are here. And most importantly, the solutions are here”.

Also, the Chairman, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, for Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States, Dr. Samuel Olawoye, stressed the need for synergy between regulatory agencies and manufacturers.

He called for targeted policy support and increased investment in manufacturing hubs, while also encouraging stronger engagement with research institutions like NASENI to develop commercially viable products.

Also speaking at the Osun State Stakeholders meeting, Director of Technology, at the Osun State Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Mr. Lateef Adeoye highlighted the importance of early exposure to technical skills in shaping future innovators. He encouraged increased collaboration between the education sector and NASENI to prepare youths for emerging industrial roles.

Speaking on behalf of the private sector, Sunday Babalola from Nigerian Machine Tools, NMT, pointed out the need for local patronage of Nigerian-made equipment and machinery.

He noted that industrial development cannot thrive without intentional efforts to support domestic manufacturers through government procurement policies and public awareness.

The panel session featured seasoned experts who addressed barriers hindering local manufacturing, including low consumer trust in Made-in-Nigeria goods, poor quality standards, and limited access to production financing. They also shared strategies to scale production and enhance patronage of locally manufactured products.
