SOKOTO — In a strategic move to strengthen training, discipline, and unity among its personnel, the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division on Monday flagged off the 2025 Inter-Formations Corporals and Below Competition at Giginya Barracks, Sokoto.
The week-long event, hosted by the 8 Division Garrison, brings together formations across the division—including the 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 48 Engineer Brigade, 58 Signal Brigade, and the host formation. The competition is designed not only to reward excellence but to reinforce operational readiness and professional standards among junior personnel.
In his welcome address, Brigadier General AbdulMalik Jibia Mohammed, Commander of 8 Division Garrison, emphasized that the competition goes beyond rivalry.
“This competition is more than just about winning,” he said. “It’s about strengthening junior leadership, reinforcing core military values, and fostering a strong esprit de corps. It also promotes inter-unit cooperation while sharpening the physical resilience, tactical skills, and initiative of our Non-Commissioned Officers.”
The event is part of the Nigerian Army’s broader efforts to enhance combat effectiveness, particularly in the face of modern security challenges such as asymmetric warfare.
Representing the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Brigadier General Moses Udom Ikobah, Commander of the 78 Supply and Transport Brigade, stressed the strategic value of the competition.
“This reflects the Chief of Army Staff’s vision to transform the Nigerian Army into a highly motivated and mission-ready force,” he stated. “It’s not just about physical endurance but also about building leadership and tactical competence at the grassroots level.”
The competition features a range of rigorous exercises, including map reading, swimming, drill, endurance runs, and weapon handling—each designed to test and refine the combat readiness of the participants.
To ensure fairness, judges and umpires were carefully selected, and organizers emphasized transparency throughout the event.
Brigadier General Mohammed praised the formations for their two-week intensive preparation.
“This is not a time for division or unhealthy rivalry. Compete with honor, represent your formations with pride, and use this opportunity as a stepping stone toward becoming the leaders our nation needs,” he urged.
With that, the 2025 Inter-Formations Corporals and Below Competition was officially declared open, setting the stage for a spirited showcase of strength, skill, and the unyielding commitment of the Nigerian Army.
