ABUJA – The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has urged Nigerian leaders to put citizens’ welfare above personal ambition, as it marked 42 years since the passing of Mallam Aminu Kano, a respected advocate for social justice.
The party also called for the reversal of allegedly rigged elections in parts of Northern Nigeria, stressing the need for credible democracy.
In a statement signed by its National Chairman, Falalu Bello, the PRP honoured Aminu Kano as a visionary who stood for the marginalised and fought for equality.
The party highlighted Kano’s legacy as a voice for the talakawa (common people), and his socialist ideals that cut across ethnic and class lines.
“On this solemn occasion, we pay tribute to a remarkable leader and advocate for the marginalised, Mallam Aminu Kano,” the statement read.
The PRP called on politicians to adopt Kano’s values—leadership based on inclusion, dialogue, and service to all. It stressed that democratic institutions must serve the people and be accessible, especially to the disadvantaged.
“We honour his legacy as we reflect on his struggle for justice, democracy, and the upliftment of the talakawa,” it continued.
The PRP cited the Sawaba Declaration, co-authored by Kano, which urged the transformation of government from an oppressive force into a tool for liberation.
Quoting the declaration:
“At present, the machinery of government exists only to conserve the privilege of a selfish minority. The talakawa must organise politically to take power and convert government from an instrument of oppression into one of emancipation.”
The party also noted Kano’s fight for women’s rights, his rejection of ethnic politics, and his commitment to the poor. It urged leaders to renew their dedication to these ideals.
“In today’s climate, the need for social justice is urgent. We call on leaders and young politicians to embrace Kano’s inclusive and people-focused leadership,” the PRP stated.
The party concluded by calling for action, not just remembrance. Power, it said, must remain with the people, and every voice, especially the talakawa, must count.
“Let us honour Aminu Kano’s legacy through action, keeping his vision for a just society alive in today’s leadership,” the statement added.
