Oghara – It was a day of grandeur and cultural pride as His Royal Majesty Uku Oghara Na Me’ The Orefe III Noble Eshemitan, The Ovie Of Oghara Kingdom conferred a revered chieftaincy title on the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri. The historic event, which took place on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the palace of the monarch, attracted dignitaries, traditional rulers, and well-wishers from far and wide.
The renowned academic was officially installed as the Omoko of Oghara Kingdom, a title that recognizes his outstanding contributions to the development of the polytechnic and his service to society. Performing the traditional rites, the king commended the professor’s dedication to education and community progress.
“You have not only uplifted this institution but have also brought pride to Oghara Kingdom. Your achievements speak for you, and this honor is well deserved,” the monarch stated as he bestowed the chieftaincy title.
During the ceremony, the Master of Ceremonies extolled the Rector’s vast knowledge and leadership, hailing him as a ‘walking encyclopedia, an educational deity, and a man of many parts.’ As the traditional rites were performed, the atmosphere erupted in celebration, with cultural displays and energetic dances from the Oghara people.
Chief Lucas Onarigho, former bursar of the Polytechnic, lauded the conferment, emphasizing that it was long overdue. “He is a man of many talents, and his contributions to the growth of the Polytechnic have been enormous. This is a well-earned recognition,” he said.
The celebrations continued at the residence of Chief Frank Emiko, where guests were treated to a feast and a captivating performance of the famous Uje dance from Udu Kingdom. At the reception, Chief Barr. Andrew Oghene-Aga Orugbo, Chairman of the Governing Board, expressed confidence in the Rector’s ability to uphold the responsibilities of his new title. “Professor Ufuophu-Biri has proven himself as a capable leader, and I have no doubt that he will handle this role with the same excellence,” he remarked.
Dr. Joseph Nana, a member of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council, described the Rector as an all-round achiever. “He fits into any leadership role seamlessly. His performance as Rector has been exemplary, and this title will only propel him to greater heights,” he added.
Echoing similar sentiments, Chief Vincent Atumah, the Unuevwerho of Oghara Kingdom, welcomed the elevation, noting that the title would bring added prestige to the professor. “The Omoko title is significant, and it will open more doors for him. It is an honor well deserved,” he said.
Speaking to journalists after his installation, Professor Ufuophu-Biri expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, attributing the honor to God, his family, and the Polytechnic community. He also reflected on the significance of the title ‘Omoko,’ which translates to ‘parrot’ in the local dialect.
“The parrot is a bird renowned for its speech and eloquence, a creature whose voice carries wisdom. This title signifies excellence in communication, leadership, and service. I am deeply humbled and inspired to do even more for the Polytechnic and the Oghara Kingdom,” he said.
With this new honor, the Omoko of Oghara Kingdom, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri, cements his legacy not only as an academic powerhouse but also as a cultural icon and a leader destined for greater impact.
