By Dayo Johnson, Akure
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has assured residents of their safety following recent attacks and killings in Akure North Local Government Area by bandits.
The governor vowed to secure the state and bring those responsible for the killings in four affected communities to justice.
During a visit to the Alajido and Sunday Camp farm settlements, Aiyedatiwa assured residents of immediate security measures to address their plight.
The attacked and displaced communities include Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, Ademekun Camp, and Aba Alajido Camp in the Ala Elefosan area.
Speaking through the Commander of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, Aiyedatiwa condemned the attacks and pledged swift action.
“On behalf of the good people of Ondo State, I commiserate with the affected families. We assure residents and farmers that now that the government is here, we will secure the area and bring the culprits to justice,” he said.
“The governor has summoned all heads of security agencies to ensure such an attack does not happen again.”
Aiyedatiwa urged residents to return to their homes and farms, assuring them of their security.
Nine people were killed in two of the four affected communities.
Survivors Speak
Regent of Ademekun in Akure North, Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, recounted the ordeal of her people, praising the government for its swift response.
“Immediately I was informed, I called the attention of all security agencies and the government. I appreciate their quick intervention,” she said.
A survivor, 35-year-old farmer Samson Joro from Taraba State, expressed distress over the attack.
“My family and I have nowhere else to go. We don’t know why they attacked us,” he said.
“At about midnight, we heard gunshots. At first, they were distant, but soon they came closer. Before we realized what was happening, they were here. I heard my neighbor and his wife screaming.
“It was the herdsmen. By the time they left, we counted nine bodies, including a man and his child.”
Residents of the affected communities have called for justice and better security measures.
