As environmental challenges become increasingly evident in Nigeria, particularly during the dry season, Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) is stepping up its efforts to promote sustainability by committing to plant 10,000 trees annually.
In a recent press release from the management, signed by the company’s Media Specialist, Edith Afieroho, SEEPCO highlighted its Go Green initiative, which aligns with global sustainability objectives and supports Nigeria’s battle against deforestation, air pollution, and climate change. The program aims to enhance biodiversity, reduce carbon footprints, and cultivate greener communities. Additionally, SEEPCO is expanding its operations with in-house green nets covering over 1,000 square meters and constructing greenhouses to boost seedling production.
Afieroho emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship, stating, “To date, SEEPCO has successfully planted 10,000 trees as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on environmental conservation. We plan to continue this effort throughout the year.”
She further noted, “Our commitment to environmental sustainability goes beyond compliance; it is our responsibility to drive measurable impact and shape a cleaner, greener future.
“The tree-planting initiative includes a diverse range of species, such as Neem, Crape Myrtle, Golden Shower, and Flamboyant trees, with an expected survival rate of 60-80%. Dedicated teams will ensure ongoing care through watering, mulching, pruning, and other horticultural practices.
‘SEEPCO has actively involved key stakeholders in this initiative, including representatives from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and the Federal Ministry of Environment (FMEnv), who have taken part in tree-planting activities. The initiative has also garnered enthusiastic support from employees, many of whom have volunteered for reforestation efforts.
“At SEEPCO, we measure success not only by business growth but also by the positive changes we make in our communities,” Afieroho added. “We firmly believe that true success lies in making a lasting impact on the environment.” As SEEPCO continues its mission to promote sustainability, it exemplifies how progress and environmental responsibility can coexist harmoniously.
