SOKOTO: The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto, Major General Ibikunle Ajose, emphasized on Monday that strategic leadership skills are critical for the success of military operations in the country, particularly in securing national interests.
During the formal opening of the 8 Division Sokoto Operations Planning Cadre training workshop, General Ajose pointed out that the complex security challenges facing the nation demand strong and authentic leadership at all levels, especially at the junior command level, where tactical decisions are made swiftly and can have long-term strategic implications.
“The ability of commanders to make sound decisions, lead with confidence, and adapt to changing environments is key to ensuring mission success and operational efficiency,” General Ajose said. He stressed that the effectiveness of military operations depends on the leadership’s ability to coordinate seamlessly with other security agencies to achieve collective security goals.
The GOC, who is also the Commander of Sector 2 Operation Fansan Yamma, explained that the training would enhance leadership skills among junior commanders, in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s (COAS) training objectives for 2025.
“This training provides an opportunity for participants to refine their leadership and planning skills through interactive sessions, practical exercises, and shared experiences,” he stated, adding that the workshop would include representatives from various services and security agencies.
General Ajose noted that military operations no longer occur in isolation, stressing the importance of inter-agency cooperation in a joint operational environment. “We must synchronize our efforts, share intelligence, and make informed decisions in real-time as commanders,” he said. He also highlighted that the presence of colleagues from different agencies reinforces the importance of strategic collaboration in addressing security challenges.
The workshop, running from February 17 to 21, includes participants from key security agencies in the state, such as the DSS, NSCDC, Customs, NIS, NDLEA, FRSC, Police, and the Correctional Service. General Ajose concluded by emphasizing that the initiative is a significant step toward strengthening cooperation and fostering a unified approach to tackling security threats within Sokoto and beyond.
