ABUJA – THE Wounded-in-action Nigerian soldiers invited to participate in the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, have won multiple medals, including gold, at the recently concluded event.

Ruth Simon secured a gold medal in the rowing competition. In the sitting volleyball event, the Nigerian team, comprising Effiom Antigha, Ameh Thomas, Ijigba Robinson, Salisu Damjuma, Dazzi Ayuba Gosa, Iheanacho Joseph, Yahaya Abdulmudalib, Ifeoma Loveleen Nwagbo, and Dimka Gloria, won silver.

In swimming and rowing, Igube Festus claimed a bronze medal, while Dimka Gloria added two more bronze medals in the rowing competition.

The seventh edition of the Games brought together 500 competitors from 23 countries worldwide. Founded in 2014 by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the Invictus Games celebrate the resilience and achievements of wounded, injured, or sick service personnel and veterans.

Amid visa setbacks, the Nigerian team achieved remarkable success, securing gold, silver, and bronze medals. Their outstanding performance showcased resilience and determination on the global stage. Nigeria was the only African nation invited to the prestigious event, making the country’s participation a significant milestone.

The Africa Unconquered Foundation, in collaboration with the Defence Headquarters, managed to send 14 members of Team Nigeria from the original 21 competitors.

Unfortunately, the team captain, physiotherapist, and Director of Sports could not attend due to visa issues.

CEO and Co-founder of the Africa Unconquered Foundation, Derrick Cobbinah, said, “After nine months of intense training, the Invictus Games represent not just a competition but a vital part of our soldiers’ healing journey.

“We are committed to showcasing their resilience and strength, and we look forward to hosting the Invictus Games in Nigeria, hopefully in 2029, where we can celebrate their achievements on home soil.”

Also, CFO and Co-founder, Alvin Atsegwasi, pointed out the role of strategic partnerships in making this journey possible.

Atsegwasi acknowledged the invaluable support of Prince Harry, the Defence Headquarters, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. C.G. Musa, Monster Energy, Canadian Tire, and Sports Chek.

He added that their contributions were instrumental in empowering Nigerian soldiers and ensuring they had the necessary resources to excel in the Invictus Games.

Also showed that Nigeria is strong at the Games, which underscores the country’s resilience and talent, further cementing its place in the international sporting community.
