A rising Nigerian Afro-pop singer, Samuel Uhunoma Ojeabulu, professionally known as Sammylong, is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, whose passion for music has been woven into the fabric of his life from a very young age.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Sammylong’s musical journey began in the church choir, where his love for music first took root. As a child, he was naturally drawn to the world of melodies and rhythms, and it was within the church environment that he discovered his talent for singing and playing a variety of instruments. His time in the choir provided the ideal platform for him to explore and develop his musical abilities, laying the foundation for the artist he would one day become.
From his early years, Sammylong found himself immersed in the world of music, constantly surrounded by melodies that inspired him to experiment with different instruments. His journey took a more structured turn when he became part of “The Elevated Crusaders,” a musical group he formed with his longtime friend, El $age, and several other talented artists. The group’s collaborative spirit allowed Sammylong to experiment with various sounds and genres, and it was during this time that his musical identity began to fully take shape.
One of Sammylong’s key collaborations with El $age was the release of the hit single Marathon. This Afro-pop track became a defining moment in Sammylong’s career, as it showcased his ability to blend catchy rhythms with meaningful, heartfelt lyrics. Marathon is a song that speaks to the lengths a man is willing to go to for the love of a woman, reflecting Sammylong’s dedication to infusing his music with personal experiences and emotions. The song quickly gained popularity, earning widespread acclaim for its groovy beat and feel-good vibe. It was clear that Sammylong’s music was resonating with listeners, and Marathon became a fan favorite across various platforms.
As Sammylong continued to nurture his passion for music, he saw it as more than just a career, it became his purpose and a source of immense joy. “Music has always been a huge part of my life,” he shares. “It has always been my passion, so I am following my passion. When you do something you love, work becomes fun. That’s what music does for me.” Sammylong’s commitment to music is not just about creating hits but about making an impact through his lyrics, which often center on themes of love, positivity, and motivation. For him, every song is an opportunity to connect with listeners and share a message of hope and joy.
Looking forward, Sammylong is set to release an upcoming EP titled Happy Hour in mid-2025, a collaborative effort with El $age. The EP will embody the infectious energy of Nigerian culture, celebrating happiness, unity, and love. Sammylong is excited about the project, which he hopes will reach a global audience and further cement his place in the music industry. “The title Happy Hour reflects the celebratory spirit of Nigerian culture,” he says. “We want to create something that resonates with people from all walks of life, spreading joy and positivity through music.”
Throughout his career, Sammylong has seen the Nigerian music industry grow into a thriving, dynamic space that continues to gain global recognition. He believes the key to his success lies in staying true to himself and his passion, rather than following trends. “What makes me different is my ability to stick with inspiration rather than imitation,” he explains. “I make music based on my persona, personal experiences, and everything around me.” As he looks ahead, Sammylong envisions a future where he remains at the forefront of the music scene, delivering not only catchy tunes but also music that speaks to the heart.
