The concern citizens of Nigeria residing in Edo State under the name, Edo Non-Indigenes have urged the judiciary to show equity and ensure that justice is served in the Edo governorship election petition under their care.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the coordinator of the group, Mr Clement E. Iria called on the judiciary to boldly uphold Justice, equity and fairness in handling the petition filed by Dr. Asue Ighodalo against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressive Congress APC over the just-concluded Edo State governorship election.
Iria said that Asue Ighodalo, a candidate of People Democratic party in the election, has challenged the results announced by INEC, alleging discrepancies between the official figures and those uploaded on the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal. This has also sparked debates, with many stakeholders urging the judiciary to ensure a just and credible resolution.
“The judiciary must remain impartial and ensure that justice prevails and the mandate given to the rightful candidate. The credibility of our democracy is at stake, and we cannot afford to give Nigeria a bad name due to lack of transparency in handling electoral disputes,” he said.
Iria further emphasized the importance of judicial integrity, stating that the international community are closely watching Nigeria’s democratic process. He warned that any compromise in the judicial proceedings could further damage the country’s reputation.
“I urge all relevant authorities to prioritize the will of the people and uphold democratic principles in resolving the election petition.
“As the case progresses, stakeholders across the nation and beyond continue to call for a judicial process that reflects equity, fairness, and the rule of law,” Iria added.
